From reference photo to tattoo stencil
Add your photo
Drop a picture, paste one, or pick a file. Clear subjects with strong contrast work best: a face in side light, a logo, a silhouette.
Tune the look
Drag Detail until the shapes you need are black and the noise is gone. Raise Remove specks to clean up. Switch between Cut stencil and Line art any time.
Download and use it
Save a PNG, an SVG for a cutting machine, or a PDF to print. Print at the size you need and always test on scrap first.
What makes a good tattoo stencil
A tattoo stencil is a line drawing that gets transferred to skin so the artist has a guide for placement, size and shape. The lines need to be clean, continuous and a sensible weight. A conversion that gives broken lines, scattered dots or a mess of tiny marks is slower to fix than to draw by hand.
StencilBench starts in Line art mode for this reason. It compares each part of the photo with its surroundings and draws a line where a feature stands out, then removes specks and joins the result into solid strokes. You control how much detail survives and how thick the lines are.
Choose the right amount of detail
For portraits, start with Detail around the middle and raise Smoothing a notch or two. Skin texture is the usual cause of noisy output. Smoothing removes it without erasing the larger features such as eyes, lips and the jaw line. If the result is too sparse, raise Detail a little at a time.
Set the line weight
Thin lines give a delicate guide but may fade quickly when transferred. Heavier lines hold up better and are easier to follow. Line weight in StencilBench grows every line evenly, so adjust it after Detail and Remove specks are right.
Print and transfer
Download the PNG or PDF and print it at the size you need, or open the SVG in your printing software and scale it there. Check the size on the body before you commit. Always confirm proportions and placement yourself, and follow your studio’s own procedures when you transfer a stencil.
Settings explained
Cut stencil or line art
Cut stencil turns your photo into solid black and white shapes. Black is what gets cut out, so paint or ink goes through it. White is the sheet that stays. Line art draws only the edges as black lines on white, which suits tracing and transfer paper.
Detail
In cut stencil mode, Detail sets how dark a pixel must be to turn black. In line art mode it sets how faint an edge can be and still get a line. If your stencil is a solid black blob, lower it. If shapes are missing, raise it.
Smoothing and Remove specks
Smoothing blurs the photo slightly first, which removes skin texture and grain. Remove specks deletes black bits below a size you choose. In cut stencil mode it also fills tiny white holes, since those would be too small to hold together as paper.
Bridges
A bridge is a thin strip of sheet that ties an island to the rest. Think of the middle of the letter O or the pupil of an eye. Without a bridge, that piece falls out when you cut. StencilBench finds each island and joins it to the main sheet along the shortest path. Widen the bridge for flimsy paper, narrow it for fine detail.

Tattoo stencil questions
Is this tattoo stencil maker free?
Yes. Line art, PNG, SVG and PDF downloads are free with no watermark or sign-up. Extra exports for large or layered work are planned but not for sale.
Is my reference photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo is converted inside your browser and is not sent to our servers. It disappears when you close or refresh the page.
Why are my lines broken or dotted?
Detail is probably too low, or the photo has soft shading. Raise Detail a little, lower Remove specks if real lines are being deleted, and add Line weight to join thin strokes.
Can I print the stencil on transfer paper?
Download the PNG or PDF and print it at the size you want using the transfer method your studio uses. The PDF fits one Letter or A4 page.
Does this replace drawing a custom design?
No. It converts the lines already in a photo. Composition, placement, size on the body and skin suitability are your call, and you should check the result before you use it.
Can I use any photo or artwork?
Only use images you have the right to use. The tool does not check ownership, and you are responsible for what you convert and how you use it.
